Who are We Trusting in? Us or God?
This song is profound. Taken from the Book of Job, it makes sense that it resonates with us. Job speaks with the same taint of sin and self sufficiencey that inhabits us all. It leads us to focus too much on the horizontal and question the vertical. I love that God never answers Job’s complaints and charges. God simply points out the vast gulf in understanding, wisdom and between He and Job. God says to Job, “Where were you when I made the earth, seas and everything that inhabits them? Can you contemplate doing what is easy for me?” God is kindly pulling rank. Since Job has no idea what it takes to make a snowstorm or a planet, how can he possibly be in a position to question God’s wisdom and fairness?
When we see that God is God and we are not, life becomes infinitely simpler:
Then Job replied to the Lord:
2 “I know that you can do all things;
no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’
Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.
4 “You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.’
5 My ears had heard of you
but now my eyes have seen you.
6 Therefore I despise myself
and repent in dust and ashes.Job 42
