Sermon Series: Matthew 1:18-25- God’s Plan is Better than Ours | Pastor Unlikely

Joseph and Mary are giants of the Christian faith.  They are the parents of the Messiah.  They are the couple chosen to raise Jesus.  Think about the enormity of that!  What an amazing blessing and responsibility, right?

We sometimes forget in our marveling at their positions that they were just two regular people like you and I.  They were a poor carpenter and his likely teenaged bride to be when they received the Word from the Lord of their callings.  We can learn very much from their reactions. Joseph is a good man who does his best.  He did not want to publically accuse Mary of adultery and expose her to stoning.  But on his own, he planned to divorce her.  He would have condemned his innocent betrothed and left her alone to carry Jesus.  What mistakes our own judgment bring about, even in good intentions.  Mary hears of the great challenges that will befall her from an angel and agrees immediately.

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

What faith! It took them laying down their plans, hopes and dreams before the Lord for the Glory of the Lord to be born in their lives.
