39 Comprehensive Bible Verses on Halloween

The Bible is Our Guide on Halloween

The Bible is called to Word of God for a reason.  It is God speaking to His children.  Paul commends the Berean church in the Book of Acts calling them noble-minded due to their reliance on the Bible.  They do not take Paul’s word on an issue without question.  They test everything he teaches against the Scriptures.  They use their Bibles as the barometer of truth in life.

This is the same approach we should use for all things in life, even today 2000 years later.  God’s Word does not change with time.  Christians may disagree about Halloween.  The living, powerful Word will lead us to a conclusion that helps us follow Jesus as He directs.

My family does not celebrate Halloween.  For our reasons see Why We Don’t Celebrate Halloween.  Yours might handle it differently.  I love you as a brother or sister in Christ regardless.  We can take different paths on this issue and stay united in the love of Christ.

Here are 39 Bible Verses that deal with the issues involved with Halloween – freedom in Christ, witchcraft, sorcerer, darkness, and celebrations are all covered.  I pray the Lord leads you on this question.

39 Bible Verses on Halloween

1)  Romans 10:9

Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

(Note:  This is the most important one.  There is nothing in here about trick or treating or not.  Salvation and our identity in Christ is based on Jesus not how we handle one holiday.  See 11 Life Changing Bible Verses about being Born Again)

2)  Romans 12:1-2

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

3)  Colossians 2:16

Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.

Note – Christ died to set us free.  You are allowed to live in that liberty.  What Grace Really Means: Freedom

4)  Colossians 2:20-23

If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations—  “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch”  (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings?  These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

5)  Romans 14:1-23

As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. …

6)  Ephesians 5:11

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.

There are No Such Things as Little Sins

7)  Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

8)  2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” …

9)  Ephesians 4:27

And give no opportunity to the devil.

10)  1 Corinthians 10:21

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.

11)  1 Peter 5:8

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

12)  Galatians 5:1

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

13)  Galatians 5:13

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

14)  2 Corinthians 3:17

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

15)  Leviticus 19:31

“Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.

16)  Deuteronomy 18:9-12

When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you.

18)  Ephesians 5:6-12

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. …

19)  1 John 5:19

We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

20)  Romans 8:1-4

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

21)  1 Chronicles 10:13

So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance.

22)  Isaiah 5:20

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

23)  Leviticus 20:27

“A man or a woman who is a medium or a necromancer shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones; their blood shall be upon them.”

24)  1 Thessalonians 5:22

Abstain from every form of evil.

25)  Colossians 2:8

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

26)  Mark 7:22-23

Coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

27)  Joshua 24:15

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

28)  Exodus 22:18

“You shall not permit a sorceress to live.

29)  3 John 1:11

Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.

30)  1 Peter 2:9

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

31)  Hebrews 11:25

Choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

32)  Hebrews 10:26-29

For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has spurned the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?

33)  Galatians 5:19-21

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

34)  2 Kings 23:24-25

Moreover, Josiah put away the mediums and the necromancers and the household gods and the idols and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might establish the words of the law that were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the Lord. Before him there was no king like him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses, nor did any like him arise after him.

  1. Thank you for assembling these passages (words of God), which shine the light of truth. I also appreciate the spirit in which this was written, in love that unites us in Christ, poignantly displayed. Good work.

  2. Thank you for these. Every year my church ( in the UK ) holds a Light Party to celebrate God and all that is good in the world. Last year about 300+ children and adults came to enjoy crafts, face painting etc, refreshments and a short service with puppets at which the Gospel was shared. A small group of us stay behind the scenes in constant prayer. Needless to say we arm ourselves with Scripture. These verses will be a wonderful help.
