God is Our Comforter
Revelation 21:4 is a well-known passage in the church. We quote it with joy knowing intellectually that in heaven there will be no more tears, sorrow, crying or pain. That alone is just awesome. But we sometimes miss exactly what John writes:
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Did we ever notice who wipes away our tears in heaven? God.
God is Tender with His Children
We tend to think God is far away from us. We may have the picture of God as the grumpy white-bearded old man on a mountain. We may think of God as a great dispassionate force in the universe working in mysterious ways. It doesn’t matter exactly what our misperception is, the problem is we miss how God describes Himself.
He is the perfectly loving Father. We are His Children. A good earthly father treats his little ones with great care. He is gentle, loving and tender. He does anything to protect them and take away their pain.
Can we imagine how much better an Eternally Perfect Father acts toward His kids?
We get glimpses of the answer in this passage. He will dwell among us. There will be no more death or crying or pain. God, Himself will wipe away our tears. God reaching out with His hand and wiping every one of them away.
Is there anything more personal and intimate?
Can we imagine what this will be like? God who keeps the universe in order and made the mountains will gently wipe away the evidence of sins effect from His beloved creation.
Isn’t it wonderful?
Is this how you are viewing God today?
