D.L. Moody was once asked why he constantly urged millions of Christians to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Good question generally, right? Why is it so important for us to seek God’s Spirit, His direction, and His power if we are already saved by the blood of Jesus?
Moody thought for a moment and then answered.
“Well,” he said, “Because I leak!”
He did not literally have a hole in him that allowed the Holy Spirit to leak out. Rather, Moody acknowledged that his own sinful nature worked constantly in opposition to the holiness of God. Each day he needed more God to overcome the stubborn sinfulness that lurked in him.
We all leak, don’t we? Due to our imperfection and sin, one day we are overflowing with love, compassion, and zeal for the Lord. We see the Lord work in mighty ways and want that mountaintop experience to continue perpetually. Yet, the very next day, our flesh compels us to drag ourselves around like a grumpy stray dog barking at everyone in our path. The valley that follows the mountaintop can be an ugly thing.
We all desperately need the continual filling of the Holy Spirit to avoid the ups and downs of the Christian life. He allows us to consistently do what we otherwise could never do in our flesh. Praise and serve Jesus as living sacrifices.
Seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit, today and every day!
