Sunday Morning Church: Matthew 9: 9-13 – A Man Running from God

God Pursues His Children

Matthew continues in his account with an interesting subject, his calling by Jesus from a life as a tax collector. We know from the other Gospel accounts that Matthew is originally named, Levi, a name heavy with meaning. He was a Levite, a man born to serve God. But when we meet him first, he is as far from his calling as he possibly could be. He is a hated tax collector in the North of Israel, many miles from the Tempel in Jerusalem. He chose sin and greed over life serving God and the people of Israel say good riddance. That is never Jesus’ heart, though.

The Savior comes for each of us, no matter how far we run.
